You NEED to listen to ‘NEED’
The first time I listened to a 3OH!3 song was in 2008. I was in the eighth grade and my friend whipped out her ipod to play me a song called ‘Don’t Trust Me’. I remember thinking how cool and funky the song was and I became pretty obsessed with it.
Don’t Trust Me ended up being the band’s biggest hit and would later on define an entire generation of millennials. Anytime that song is played anywhere, you are guaranteed to see a bunch of mid twenty somethings singing along and reminiscing about life when they were teenagers. The vibes are fun and the lyrics are funny: it’s the perfect throwback dance song. Don’t Trust Me is a song on the band’s sophomore album called ‘WANT’.
Flash forward thirteen years and the band has just released their most recent album called ‘NEED’. It’s obvious that NEED is a very similar title to their 2008 album ‘WANT’. The music seems to be a tribute to the highly successful album in the way that it has the same fun, edgy, and weird vibes.
The duo who make up the band, Sean Foreman and Nathaniel Motte from Boulder, Colorado have been playing sold out venues around the world since 2008. After celebrating their ten year anniversary of their RIAA certified Gold album WANT, the duo went back to their hometown of Boulder, CO to record their new music for the album ‘NEED’ with Photo Finish Records.
To celebrate the release of the new album, ‘NEED’, 3OH!3 held an album release party as well as a birthday celebration for Sean at The Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood, CA on August 27. I attended along with my best friend to see the show. It was both of our first concerts back since the pandemic and it was truly the best night we had in a long time. As soon as we got inside the venue, we were handed free glow-sticks to wear during the show.
As we waited in the front row for the band, we danced and sang along to throwback hits from the DJ of ‘Emo Nite’. Inflatable animals and balls were thrown around as we danced to songs from Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance. As soon as the real show started, the energy was incredible. Everyone was so hyped up and as soon as 3OH!3 entered the stage, we all put up our hands in the 3OH!3 symbol (see the cover art on the album ‘NEED’ for reference) and enjoyed an incredible gig!
Throughout the show, the duo kept stressing how thankful they are for their fans and that they “make music to make people happy”. 3OH!3 have always made it known that they truly enjoy what they do and making people happy with their music. The band performed songs from their new album ‘NEED’ and multiple songs from their other albums from over the years. It was truly such a fun night and what made it 10 times better was my best friend stealing the setlist off the stage for us to keep just like the lyrics in the song ‘Don’t Trust Me’. “Setlist you stole off the stage…”
