“Moulting”: The face melting debut from Blurred Reality

Young Lurgan trio Blurred Reality exploded onto the scene with their debut singles, “The End of Attrition” and “Lost At Sea”. Now, the three wise men return with four more killer tracks to spark a new era for Northern Irish metal.

Blurred Reality aren’t a band to shy away from the “what ifs” of going against the current. They explore, they fuse and they seek to craft something that places their musical thinking in the spotlight. “Moulting” (released earlier this year) is a showpiece of musical juxtaposition. From start to finish, you get a rich taste of the band’s control: You will find tamed maturity, then a young, ruthless sound. Explorative confidence, then a feeling of, “will we approach this? Why not”. Blurred Reality is the young metal wildcard that has been missing from the deck.

The band state, “We like to bring our music, and bring it hard”. A firm statement from the newcomers, “Moulting” sets this foundation.  The opening of lead track, “The End of Attrition”, may feel deceptive to this promise ,but the key to this EP is trusting the process. The track soon erupts into a rumbling weather storm of pounding drums and brooding riffs that nod to the ferocity of metal heroes, Metallica and post-genre Danes, Volbeat.

Personal top pick, “Romanticize” plays with experimental tones on lead guitar and features a stunning quick-fire drum solo that would make any metal drummer smile. The appropriately named “Lost at Sea”, spews a turbulent atmosphere of dangerous waters, that makes us feel as though we are bobbing in the icy waters of unexplored territory. Penultimate power ballad track “Inside Out”, tames the listener with its delicate and vulnerable essence before the EP’s final bow: “Constant Misfortune”.

To put it simply, “Moulting” is proper headbanging gold. We highly anticipate what Blurred Reality stir up next!
